The marking appears on signal pistols made in Sydney, Australia, by the CSR or Colonial Sugar Refining Co. To the best of my knowledge nobody has discovered the meaning of the marking other than it is an ownership and/or inspection mark. I am keen to know any more about this mark as well! Regards Al...

In New South Wales the State where I live, no license is required to own a signal pistol, as its considered a safety item.

Just posted on the Gunboards Forum, a Chubb serial number 1034, dated 1916.

This is the highest serial number observed so far and puts pay to the theory that the second contract may have been a duplicate of the first contract for 500 pistols, from the Ministry of Munitions

I do not think W.S.W stands for William Shermully, as you say they did not make flare guns in the Great War. I did consult a book in the library of the Royal Armouries which is a directory of several thousand engineering firms who made things under contract for the War Office, Ministry of Munitions ...
